Pictures from the Air National Guard’s history book depict the Guard responding to the massive quake that affected the state. Kulis Air National Guard Base served as a shelter and source of food for victims from the local community. Guardsmen also provided airlift, delivering supplies to townships that were cut off from the rest of the state. The Alaska Air National Guard’s response to the devastation earned it the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award that year. Photo courtesy: 176th Wing Alaska Air National Guard
